Electronic Letterhead

What is electronic letterhead?  How is it used?

When writing a letter of recommendation, using letterhead is preferred.  It allows the reader of your letter to be reminded of your institution or employer affiliation and presents a professional and polished impression.

Electronic letterhead is often designed by and available through an institution's IT department and usually includes an institution logo and institution contact information, just like paper letterhead.  It usually comes in the form of a word processing template.  To place content onto electronic letterhead, you can usually type onto the document directly or copy and paste your content into the template.

Either institutional letterhead or departmental letterhead is generally acceptable by admissions offices and hiring committees.

Tip:  If you cannot access official electronic letterhead, be sure to type your name, title and contact information onto the top of your letter so the those who read the letter will have some information about its author.

Is Electronic Letterhead a Requirement for Uploaded Letters?

Interfolio does not require letters be written on letterhead. However, we know from our experience working with admissions offices and hiring committees that letters on letterhead are preferred. For specific requirements, check with Fileholder for whom you are writing your letter.
